OVERVIEW

1 day, Level 1 Human Factors Course.

CPD points (8 hrs) for all healthcare professionals.

Embedding Human Factors (HF) science in Healthcare practice and education is a shared goal of the World Health Organisation, Royal Colleges, Clinical Regulators and forward-thinking healthcare organisations. Progress towards this goal is, however, limited by issues pertaining to capacity and capability together with the fact that many myths and misunderstandings still prevail about the purpose and approach of HF as a discipline and practice. The result is that efforts to improve patient safety in the UK and beyond over the past two decades have been hampered by a lack of integration of modern HF and safety science concepts and methods.

The Human Factors - Fundamentals Course (Level 1), is designed for a broad range of healthcare professionals seeking individually tailored, evidenced and coherent solutions to enhance patient safety, workforce wellbeing and organisational excellence.

Delegate groups will be kept small to maximise an open exchange of ideas and allow participants to interact on an individual basis with the faculty.

OBJECTIVES

1. To acquire a firm foundation in cognitive performance and explore principles and tools successfully deployed in High Reliability Organisations.

2. Appraise and tailor the development of your individual cognitive performance in a setting distinct from healthcare.

3. To recognise the limitations of resilience training as a solution to occupational stressors and develop an understanding of how the design of work systems can promote better wellbeing outcomes..

4. Develop an appreciation of how systems thinking helps us understand behaviour emergent from the component interactions within a complex healthcare system.

5. Identify how Just Culture can be a powerful driver for professional performance unencumbered by fear of blame whilst retaining balanced accountability.

This course has really ignited a new way forward for me. I felt the tutors all managed the delegates in a thoroughly professional and learned way.

Best 'non-clinical' course I have ever attended in 20 years as a doctor. The faculty were particularly impressive and the way in which teaching points were highlighted and served to cement the learning was memorable and genuinely helpful in improving attitudes and skills towards human factors application in my front-line work.
