What is Human Factors?
Human Factors is the science that uses many disciplines (such as anatomy, physiology, physics, biomechanics) to understand the interactions between humans and other elements of a system in order to optimise human well-being and overall system performance.
Within healthcare, Human Factors is still relatively new and often misunderstood; having been historically based on crew resource management (CRM) training adapted from the aviation industry. The true scope of HF in healthcare reaches far beyond this and lies in understanding and applying systems thinking methodology in this complex adaptive profession.
How is it Relevant?
At least 1 in 10 of patient admissions may lead to harm. In 2017 nearly £1.5 billion was spent on clinical negligence claims; this is expected to double by 2023. The total liability for ongoing medical negligence cases could be as much as £56.1 billion (NHS Resolution).
With the global pandemic, there is a need for us to adapt healthcare short courses to provide in-person, online courses and e-learning. A major strand of the new NHS Patient Safety Strategy involves Health Education England (HEE) developing the first-ever system-wide Patient Safety Syllabus. We are pleased to support this exciting initiative.
Trainetics is offering accredited Healthcare Human Factors short courses to support the NHS Patient Safety Strategy and guide the learner into a new way of thinking about safety in healthcare. The professional Learning Pathway provides a complete programme for the Human Factors (Ergonomics) content in the Patient Safety Syllabus that you need to develop your knowledge and skills as a Safety Specialist, integrating both patient safety and staff wellbeing.
A developed understanding of HFE in healthcare can help you to:
-
Understand error is ubiquitous and success is built around minimising and dampening out its effects.
-
Address problems by modifying the design of the system to better aid people rather than teaching people to modify their behaviour.
-
Focus on rigorous, elegant, evidence-based solutions to problems.
-
Design systems that are resilient to unanticipated events.
-
Improve safety culture from the individual to the organisational level.
Our training and consulting includes in-person, online and e-learning.
